Fujiwara no Sanesue (藤原実季)
FUJIWARA no Sanesue (1035 - February 10, 1092) was a Kugyo (the top court official) during the Heian period. He was the first son of FUJIWARA no Kinnari, who was in Kanin line of the Northern House of the Fujiwara clan and he held the position of Gon Chunagon (a provisional vice-councilor of state). His mother was the daughter of FUJIWARA no Sadasuke who was Awaji no kami (Provincial Governor of Awaji). Shonii (Senior Second Rank), Dainagon (chief councilor of state). He was given the post of Daijo-daijin (Grand minister of state) after his death, thus he was called Gokanin zo Dajodaijin (which means a man of Kanin line who was given Dajodaijin after his death). His sons were FUJIWARA no Kinzane, FUJIWARA no Ishi and so on. Also, he adopted FUJIWARA no Akisue who was a founder of the Rokujo Toke (the Rokujo Fujiwara family).
In 1046, he was conferred the dignity of peerage. Then, he held positions such as Sachujo (Middle Captain of the Left Division of Inner Palace Guards) and Kebiishi no betto (Superintendent of the Imperial Police). As his sister FUJIWARA no Moshi (adopted daughter of FUJIWARA no Yoshinobu) became Emperor Shirakawa's mother as a nyogo (consort) of Emperor Gosanjo, he gained the confidence of two emperors who were Emperor Gosanjo and Emperor Shirakawa and worked as In no tsukasa betto (Secretary of the office of the retired emperor's government) for Emperor Gosanjo. Then, his daughter Ishi married to Emperor Horikawa and became Emperor Toba's mother, he therefore consolidated power. He was promoted to Shonii (Senior Second Rank) in 1075, Dainagon in 1083 and established the power base of Kanin line for the future generations.
